Oil Wizards: is the new Mobil1 15w 50 ok?

i just picked up a case of Mobil1 15w 50 Synthetic Oil from wal-mart. it says its a high performance oil and made for muscle cars, supercharged, and turbocharged cars. seeing how our engines only call for 5w30 i was wondering if this will hurt my engine or performance.

Too thick for what?

How many miles are on the engine... what kind of temperatures are you gonna be seeing up til your next oil change.

15w50 is not too "thick" for a higher mileage engine in more temperate climates.

assuming all is well in there of corse, I figured he would have mentioned "the motor is a bit old and burning some 10-30 i put in there"

sounds like he has been using 5W30 upto now and has had no real problems

well hes from ohio, and i think its to thick to, the highest weight i would go is 10w40,if yr worried about blow-by, or oil pressure, 15w50 wouldnt make that much of a diffrence

Talking

Crane Cams sugests that you use 15-30 with roller rockers and non freezing areas. At least you use Moble 1.

Well looky there... yes he is. And why didn't I think to look there? LOL, I dunno but that's a good point.
In a part of the country where it rarely gets over 85*, you would be better off with a lighter grade.

well guys, i ended up buying 5w30 again AND i decided to try something else. Pennsoil Synthetic with Pennzane (developed by NASA)...i know it's probably an advertising gig! and of course i'm using a Pure One filter. the oil was a few dollars cheaper than mobil1 for a case of it so i'm trying it. my motor has 69K by the way.
if anyone knows anything about this oil i'm using, please let me know. i know there's a lot of die hard Mobil1 users here and that's what i've used in the past.
also, it's kinda wierd but since i put my new oil in it, the oil pressure gauge seems to be more sensitive. before, it would just move slowly and perhaps a little delayed. now it moves quickly and right along with the RPM's, which makes me think it's more accurate now.
another observation: the used oil seemed much cleaner compared to the used oil out of my 116000mi 94 lt1. i feel like this engine is in pretty good condition, and it probably should be with this low of miles!
...lol i love my car

I've been using Mobil 1 15W-50 since it came out. I like a thicker oil. The extra protection is worth a few hp for my application. A nitrous shot puts a lot of stress on the bearings and an oil with a lot of shear strength is vital in that setting. Also, I don;t run the car in temps less than freezing, it's always warmed up before driving, etc. And it gets rebuilt every year or two anyway!

So it all depends on your setup and how you use the car. For a daily driver in a 4-season climate, the factory recommended 5W-30 should be good unless the motor is pretty worn, in which case a thicker oil is appropriate.
