Re: oil weight ?
Run a 40wt oil year round. LT1's and LS1's both are a little looser than most engines of today and like 40wt oils better than 30 wts. Also, Royal Purple really isn't any better than a Mobil 1 oil. The 2 best oils out there for our cars are Mobil 1 0W40 and Castrol German Syntec. The Syntec is 0W30, but it almost qualifies for a 40 weight. The German stuff is the one with the red viscosity label, not the yellow label.

Re: oil weight ?
switching from a regular oil in your 120k mile engine to a synthetic might not be your best of bets. synthetic oils are superior to dino oils. however, you might find some new oil leaks if you switch to synthetic.
as far as synthetics go, german castrol and mobile 1 are good oils. take some time and do a search on oils. youll get a lot of good information.

Re: oil weight ?
I run 10w40 oil. Personally I think the best oil is Amsoil, mobil 1 is also very good as well. If you guys want to check out a cool site, with alot of lubricant information..check out http://bobistheoilguy.com/. Lucas additives are crap, Royal purple is continually gets beat by Mobil 1 synthetic, and Amsoil in oil analysis.

however, it does happen. the detergents in synthetics tend to penetrate the existing oil sludge that is currently holding back oil leaks. basically, the problem is already existant. your just revealing it by using the synthetic. if it were me, i'd probably switch to synthetic due to it superior performance and if any leaks made themselves known, fix them. just making the thread poster aware of the potential problems that could present themselves.
btw, nobody mentioned anything about oil consumption.
heres a thread that goes into detail about synthetics:
