I want to get an oil temp gauge and don't want to tap the oil pan. The sender is a 1/8th sender, can I put it in one of the oil gally holes with the plug on the head? There will be oil pressure at the sender but should still give me a reading right?

What? Oil pressure port in the head?

 

I have taken oil temp from a port just above the oil filter.

 

I drilled and tapped the oil drain plug, and screwed the electronic oil temp sensor into the drain plug. Put a connector on it, so you can remove the drain plug when required.

 

on the front or back of the head, depending which head you choose there is a small plug. Is that oil pressure behind that?

 

Nope, that is a coolant passage. There has never been any oil pressure passage in any small block head.
