Oil reading WAY off.

I changed the oil today and put 5.5 quarts in....I use the longer AC Delco filter.

After the change I did the usual check and its way above the 4 holes. Its maybe an inch or so above. Now I know I drained all the old oil out so that isnt the problem....I did have to cut the dipstick tube about an inch b/c my windage tray was in the way. Would this cause this big of a flucuation in oil reading?

What worries me was that before the change it was on the second hole of the dipstick...I could have been way low on oil it seems.

How is your oil reading for you guys that cut the tube of your dipstick?

checking oil level shouldnt be effected by cutting dipstick tube since the stick seats at the top of the tube.

In theroy yes but some have experienced a difference. I dont see it myself since the dipstick itself is supported and bent throughout the whole length of the tube. Something is up though....

I dont want to have drain out 30.00 worth of synthetic to see what is going on...

pour it back in the bottle and sell it in the For Sale section j/k.

damnit, i'm having strange readings too...but ya know, if your oil was really low, your check oil light would come on, so worry not.

Sometimes you can get a skewed reading because oil is running down the inside of the dipstick tube. Take several readings. Remove the dipstick, wipe it off, insert dipstick fully. As soon as it is all the way in, pull it back up immediately and check the level.

I chopped off some of my dipstick tube to get it in after the LT install and so far it is reading fine.

shoebox's is right. i've had that happen quite often; i've taken a reading and it showed that i had no oil because none of the holes had been covered by oil...took the reading again, and noticed that all the oil was on the sides. i guess the thickness of the oil also helps...
