It's possible with the motor in the car, sure. An engine support bar would make removing the oil pan MUCH easier, IMO, instead of having to finagle lifting it at the right angle to get the pan out.

Of course you'll need to take off the intake manifold too.

Why would you have to take the intake manifold off?

I would, just to make sure the oil pump driveshaft lined up with the oil pump stub drive. I'm sure you could finagle it up in there, but just to be sure I (personally) would pull the intake manifold just for safe keeping.

Ah, Ok...I see what you mean. However, It's just as easy to pull the pump apart and turn the gears to have it line up. Far easier than removing the intake and just as effective. Besides you should pull the pump apart to load it up with petroleum jelly....

Re: Oil pump removal

No need to pull the intake. The oil pump will not "set" if the drive shaft is not indexed right. If you need further assurance, do what bw said and pull the bottom off and turn the gear.

I have done this a couple of time and obviously getting the pan off is the worst part. Drop all the pan bolts, pull the two big motor mount bolts and lift the motor up as high as it will go by placing the jack under the bell housing. You will have just enough room to wiggle tha pan out through the rear assuming you hold your mouth right.

Make sure the pump is packed full of grease and the pickup is welded on.

Re: Oil pump removal

Ok cool thanks for your input guys. I'm pulling the intake any way to check the oil pump drive gear I had to replace the gear once already due to the hv oil pump.
