Oil Pump
Oil Pump
We'll it turns out that I think my oil pump is going south or something is wrong with my pickup. Under hard acceleration the pressure is dropping to 25 psi's.
I'm looking for a new oil pump now and I'm having a hard time figuring out what to buy. From what I here melling's are pretty good and so are moroso's. I found a melling unit at autozone for $14 and I was think about that. But how is the pickup tube connected to the old pump because I'm pretty sure that this one doesn't come with one. Do I just pull the tube out of the old pump or is it bolted in? I was also thinking about getting a high pressure pump? What would you guys suggest? perferably something with a pickup tube already connected. Should I get an oil pan gasket too?

The high volume pump that summit sells is a melling high volume pump with the pickup already tack welded on. It sells for about $50. I bought one, but haven't installed it yet. It also comes with a stock pressure spring just in case you want that.

Some people say that when you run a high volume oil pump if you are corning hard, at high RPM sometimes too much of the oil will be in the top of the motor and not in the pan, causing the pump to suck air in. However, no one has been able to prove this. My plan was to get the high volume pump, and leave an extra half a quart of oil in the pan, just in case.

DO NOT get a high volume pump with the stock pan, I used one that I got from Summit and I did a thread on here asking about using one without an answer. So I used it and put in the low pressure spring (this was after my dad told me not not to becuse he's had problems with them). Well I found at why, one day I was coming down from 110 and hit the brakes kinda' heavy and all of a sudden The check gauges light came on I had no oil pressure. That'll scare the crap outta you trust me. Once every thing got stopped the pressure came back up but that is scary. Get a stock flow pump or get a different pan. That and my oil pressure would bounce around at idle and this was with a little extra oil added and the larger filter that holds almost a whole quart, so that won't work.

Don't buy it if you heavily road race on a track. With extreme g's of cornering at high RPM the pick up can come uncovered. If you road race, you should have a good pan anyways since the stock pump might be uncovered in those conditions.
BTW, my oil pressure never fluctuates with this pump, and i'm using a mechanical oil press guage.

I think I'm gonna go with the stock melling and pick up from autozone. $19
I really think my problem is with the pick up. If I bang the pan it kinda souns funny. Maybe the pickup is about to fall off.
