Hate to say it but you may have a bearing problem. When you change your oil, let it drain through a coffee filter and see if any metal powder is left behind.

yeah he might be right about the bearing. You could have a piston hitting the head. It happened to me when my oil pressure dropped to 18psi. It sorta just happened. Also you might want to check all the spark plugs too cause sometimes if it backs out a little you'll get a ticking that sounds like that. But if you have high mileage the rod bearings might be toast.

So you guys don't think the lifter is the problem? I mean it def sounds like a valve train tick, and these are stock 120,000 lifters with my cc306..my friend spun a rod bearing not too long ago in his z28 and it sounded wayyy different!

well you could always get a new set of lifters and install them to see if it's the problem. It only takes 1 & 1/2 hours to change them out. It's possible if the rockers are too tight they are bottoming out anyways and ticking. But I still would check to make sure the spark plugs are in there snug. It happened to my friend and I and it sounded like a loud valve ticking. Good Luck

I got to thinking...if i had a collasped lifter...wouldn't there be a lot of play in the rocker arm?

if you pressed on the pushrod side of the rocker, after the car has been turned off and on, it shouldn't move. If it moves a lot or your able to push it down easily then you know it's collapsed. It may move down a little bit but any excessive play you know it's gone.

Re: Oil pressure problems...collasped lifter? (Kinda long)

Well i replaced the lifters today with the Comp Replacements (850-16) and will crank it tomrrow since i gotta wait 24 hours to let the gasket sealent to cure...

I put the RR's and pushrods back on and set the lash and everything. At first i did 1/4 turn but they were very springy, i could push on the pushrod side of the rocker and push down a lot and the RR's would even pop off! So i went with 3/4 turn and it's still like that! Is this b/c the lifters are brand new and haven't "pumped up" yet or what? I guess i'll adjust them tomorrow with the car running! Let me know what ya think!

Go back to 1/4 turn and they will pump up after starting.

my brother is having the same problem and he only has 70k miles, its a ticking and it progressively gets fatester and louder as the rpms go up. i think its a lifter, havent really heard it lately b/c its been in storage , but could it be a bearing?

i also chunked out #1 piston too. dont forget that

and yes, there was a LOT of metal to metal noise coming from that motor.

Yea there was... ^^ That's my friend who spun a bearing and destroyed #1 piston! I'm praying it's not anything in the bottom end (it sure doesn't sound like it!) Hopefully these lifters solved my problem! We'll find out later today!

Re: Oil pressure problems...collasped lifter? (Kinda long)

Well i changed the oil to 20W50 and the old oil didn't have any metal shavings in them...i ran a magnet through the drail pan for like 10 minutes and didn't find a single shaving! So i cranked it up after adjusting the vavle and everything and it was still ticking so i put my hand back where the EGR fitting is on my hooker shorties and look what i found!

It was barley hanging on there...so i pulled it off!

I going to get it welded up tomorrow since i don't have EGR anyways! Do you guys think i should send the header back and get a new one? it does have a liftime warrenty! I hope they will honor it! I bought them from Jet Hot about 2 1/2 years ago...they are hooker shorties!

You guys don't know how big of a relief this is! Thanks for all the help!

Oh and my oil pressure is now at 60 at idle ( haven't driven it around yet!)
My dad said 20W50 shouldn't be used in car motors! Is this true should i change it to a 10W30 or what? Someone shead some insight on this! Thanks!

lol........i can't believe no one mentioned that. That is usually the first thing people say. The ticking is pretty loud huh. I had the same thing.....the part that gave mine away was when i looked in my rear view mirror and saw the header bolt bouncing up and down the road behind me
