Oil Pressure

Where too start.... If I let my car sit and idle for a while (Like go into the store and let it run while i'm inside) I'll get back to my car and my check gauges light would be on, and my oil pressure would be slightly above 0 psi. my coolant temp was around 223 degrees. so it was a little hot. My car usually does really good, but I also never let it idle for long periods of time (25 min ish) on a typical day my cars coolant temp runs around 185 ish and oil pressure is around 10-15 ish at an idle. Tonight i hooked up a gauge, and cold start was 50 psi, than when my coolant got around 187 degrees, my oil pressure was 17 psi, 210 degrees it was 13 psi, and at 223 its was 11 psi, than my fans came on and started too cool it down. What are the specs for lt1 oil pressure? are my specs normal for idle? Could my oil pressure sending unit slightly be off causing my check gauges light too come on?

for the moment my car is untuned for my cam and 160 thermostat. Sending the ecm off next week!

Re: Oil Pressure

Normal LT1 oil pressure @800rpms should be 20psi. If it's dropping low enough to turn on the check gauges lamp you have problems. Could be the sending unit....would not hurt to change it. Attaching a mechanical oil pressure gauge is not a bad idea. See if the dash gauge and mechanical agree.

Have you change injectors? If so...are you running it untuned? My thoughts are running too rich, washing down the cylinders, and also thinning out the oil.

Re: Oil Pressure

GM's spec for minimum oil pressure is 6 psi. Anything lower than that turns on the check gauges light. O/p sensors can indicate low when they get old (and hot). Might be a place to start.

Who lets their car idle when they are in a store???
