Oil pan seal issue

I didn't lower my oil pan when I took the timing cover off. The seal is still intact for the most part except the very ends. What can I do from here? Can I use ultra black RTV at the ends? Also, Is it going to be necessary for me to lower the pan to get it back on? One of the guides I read said that some people have gotten away without lowering it.

trim the little ears on the cover. I like to use the gray silicone.

Make sure everything is clean from oil b/c it won't stick to oil

When you say "ears" do you mean just what comes off the sides? Or do you mean trim the whole way across the seal?
