Oil Pan Removal (K member in the way...)

I have a 1994 z28, I have an after market miloden oil pan on it... I am trying to replace the oil pan gasket on it. The pan is not there crazy race pan, just it holds 1 more qt. of oil. In trying to remove it the pan bottoms out on the k member. I pretty much have to remove the k member to get it off. My question is, how can I support the motor without the use of a cherry picker. I want to remove it and be able to support the motor and have alot of room to put on the new pan... I was thinking about supporting the motor by the tranny behind the bellhousing but the is alot of weight on one point. Let me know what you guys have done.

Thanks Mark Tisdale

Something like this will work. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Autom...01811207QQrdZ1

Or hang it with a engine hoist.

You don't have to remove the pan to put a new gasket on there. You can wiggle the old one out, and manuever the new one in with the pan still in place but unbolted.

I'm a little bit confused here, sounds like you want to drop the K-member?? I know it would be easier just to borrow or buy and engine hoist and raise the motor. The more you work on these cars the more you will realize that the right tool for the job (cherry picker) is invaluable, and trying to find another way to do things will usually just leave you pissed off

Yea I hear that, but just I don't have one at the moment, and I want to clean up the surface etc. It will be very hard to do all that with like an inch of room between the block and the pan.

I want to drop kmember adn what to know a way that some of these guys have done it, supporting the motor properly, etc.

I suppose if you had a strut tower brace you could attach the motor to it somehow which would support it from the top, then leave the trans crossmember attached and drop the K-member. That's a helluva lot of work for an oil pan gasket, but good luck!

Re: Oil Pan Removal (K member in the way...)

i guess if your adamant about doing it without a cherry picker... try dropping the k-member to its lowest point on the threads holding it in. that will give you a little extra space without dropping it completely. try dropping the oil pan, pull the old gasket out and using a coat hanger to pull the new gasket on. its not the best method for getting an oil pan gasket on. but will do the trick.

ive also heard about people using a jack to push up on the motor. but then again, one guy on this sight said that he tried that method and lost a finger doing so because the jack slipped. if you do a search, you'll probably find that post. anyways, do what you got to do.
