Hey all, this is a nightmare!!!! I am doing my oil pan gasket as we speak. I got some of the bolts (maybe 8) I am having the WORST TIME EVER taking the bolts out that are on the driver side. I had to take off the oil cooler connection that goes to the oil filter unit, that made easy to get one bolt, but there are 2 more on the driver side that i cant hit with swivles or ANYTHING. Someone said to remove the driver side motor mount which is what i am doing now so that i can hit those 2 bolts. I have the big LONG bolt out already, I know there are 3 more smaller bolts that hold the mount to the block. Am I doing this right? Will I have room to work those driver side bolts? Please someone help, this is such a PIYA, its almost worth paying a few hundred to have a shop do it!!

 

When doing my cam install, I was able to get to all the oil pan bolts to loosen or remove them to get the front of the pan to drop. You just have to use the right tools. A few I had to loosen with a wrench, but most with a ratchet and sometimes a long extension.

 

Shoebox, this is a nightmare. Thanks for tine input, but i dont see how you got the 1 bolt that is right lined up with the driver side motor mount. It IS impossible! I tried 1/4 drive ratchet sets, swivles, a wrench would NEVER fit in between there. How please, HOW!

 

I don't remember specifics, but I did not use any swivels or universals. Must have been a wrench.

 

Quote me on this, it is impossible to hit the driver side oil pan bolt that is SMACK in the middle of the motor mount! Any other ideas? Thanks Shoebox though, I will try some more.

 

sh*t i wish i could help! i cant remember what it used to look like under there when it was stock i have a full tubular kmember and long tubes now but i think before i used to use a 3/8" bix wrech to get those bishes out! other than that just use swivels and extensions to improvise on the rest of them

 

The long bolt going through the motor mount is the only thing that holds the motor up. If you take that out you can jack the motor up a bit. I have never had to do that to get to the oil pan bolts though. What you need is a combination 3/8 7/16 12 pt. Craftsman wrench. It's angled on both sides and will slide in almost anywhere. You could also get a stubby wrench of some sort, you just need a box-end wrench to get that one.

 

Oh yeah, I always use the boxed end of a wrench unless I am just spinning something down.

 

Can someone take a pic of the tool they used to get that ONE bolt out that is smack in the middle of the driver side motor mount on the oil pan? I would LOVE to see this seeing how the there is only 1 inch or so between the oil pan and the bolt, please show me :-) ANY pics will help.

I just did this a week ago and I dont remember these troubles that you are having... hmm.

done an oil pan or two at work easiest way is to remove the mtr mount bolts and jack up the engine a bit with a block of wood and a jack stand (place the wood under the crankshaft dampner) then raise it up as high as you can get it w.o stretching wires or hitting the cowl area (about 4 inches is what i got) then get to all the pan bolts with a 1/4 drive ratchet and swivel

 

The only thing I had to do was take out both motor mount to frame mount bolts. I never had to remove the mounts from the block. I used 1/4" drive ratchet/socket on some of the bolts, with a swivel. I thought it was pretty easy, actually.
