oil pan gasket

ok i have always heard that rubber oil pan gaskets do not require silicone but all of my f-body guys put it on the 4 corners of the pan. Well there's always leak a little bit and mine leaks too. They all say that it would leak more without the silicone but i dont believe them. I have a new moroso oil pan that i am putting on in a couple weeks so i was just goin to put it on with no silicone. Does everyone else here use just the rubber gasket? Thanks

Re: oil pan gasket

I used a little bit of Black RTV where the gasket lays on the timing cover. Where the cover sort of ramps up there is a little gap that could leak so I put some there. And I did the same thing on the rear main cap where it meets the block there is a small spot on each side that I just put a little bit on it, you don't need much. You don't need to cover the entire gasket, if you torque the bolts down correctly and the surface is clean there will be no leaks.

When I run Mobil1 sythetic I have the leak right under the timing chain cover, when I run regular Penzoil I have absolutely no leak period.

When I have the cover off to swap the cam I am going to put a light film of RTV on the pan gasket so I wont have that annoying leak with the synthetic oil.

Re: oil pan gasket

The RTV in the four corners near the rear main seal arch and timing chain cover arch is a very good idea.

Also, I have one of the new Moroso LT F-Body oil pans. Mine had "two" separate leaks (missing and poor welds). To save yourself some pain and suffering like I went through (on and off several times), use some thin liquid to check for leaks prior to installing the pan.

Re: oil pan gasket

I run the rubber gasket with no silicone with no leaks, but I run 20-w50, so maybe that helps.

Re: oil pan gasket

yeah i guess i'll just silicone the front and hope it all seals, since its a aftermarket pan it should seal better than my bent *** sock one.
