Oil pan gasket

I just replaced the oil pan gasket and i have realized its the front and rear main seal aswell. This is a really dumb desighn as i almost had to pull out the motor to do this (it was a pain not pulling it and doing it) just wondering if anyone else has done this with the pan in the car, and if so how do u do a camshaft withought having to do this all the time?

Re: Oil pan gasket

When you do a cam install you drop the front of the pan some and sometimes you'll be able to pull the timing cover out without ripping, and sometimes you won't.

Mine ripped during my first cam install. I'm borrowing a cherry picker during my current heads/cam install to support the motor, dropping my kmember to replace the pan gasket.

Re: Oil pan gasket

Just take out all the pan bolts and slide the new gasket over the oil pan from underneath.

Re: Oil pan gasket

Use the OLD style gasket that has cork on the side rails. This way the pan will pull down and not leak instead of the torque spacers for the silicone gasket to not squish the gasket out the side

Is this a felpro item? How do you differentiate/order it?

Torque specs, different? RTV in any locations when using it?

Re: Oil pan gasket

Order it for say a '79 model or just ask for a cork gasket for a SBC, RTV in the four corners and white lube on the end rubbers so it will slip when the pan grabs it instead of pulling it and making it thin on the very bottom of the "U".

Dude, just slide the silicone gasket over the outside of the pan. Its a piece of cake. Ive done it several times to different LT1's. There is only a couple inches between the block and pan, but thats enough to get a rag in there and wipe the surface clean. At most, just take the motor mount bolts out, and lift the engine a couple inches. Thats way more than enough room to replace a pan gasket.

I still put a little silicone in the four corners where the block meets the timing cover, and rear seal plate in the rear. Its probably not needed, but its peace of mind
