Oil Leak from top of motor?????

Hello experts,

LT-1 350, 1994, automatic.

I have an oil leak from the upper rear of my motor. I get a stream that leaves a trail behind my car as I drive.

I discovered it when I pulled into a gas station the other day. I saw a trail of oil drips that led from my car back as far as the eye could see on the road. I checked the oil and was down almost 4 quarts. I filled it back up and started the car.

The leak is trailing down my bell housing on the driver side; seems to be comming from the rear area of the upper motor; around where the old fashioned distributor would be. I also noted my oil guage quit working a few months ago. The guage would jump occasionally but usually rests at zero. Is my sending unit in this area. I cannot see back there because of the tight fit of the motor. If this is the sending unit and it is back there, is there any tips as to how to change this easily?

No motor damage thankfully. Glad I got gas when I did. The sending unit was on my very long list of things to do. It is now on top. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Rear of intake manifold leak. Gotta pull the intake manifold and change the gaskets and re-RTV it.

Look at

Shows you everything you need to know on how to do it.

Sounds like it might be a leak at the oil pressure sensor. Hard to tell, since the early 94's had the oil pressure tap above the oil filter, and the later 94's had the sensor on the top of the block, back, toward the driver's side.

Take a paper towel, and wipe the back of the block at the point where the passenger side head, the block and the intake manifold come together. That is the most common point for the intake manifold leak. A towel wet with oil will tell you that's the problem. Do the same at the base of the oil pressure sensor.

The intake manifold leak will coat the back of the engine and the bell housing, but usually doesn't leak bad enough to cause a constant drip. The oil pressure sensor connection, is under 20-40psi pressure are normal driving RPM.

problem solved...

thanks for the help. The 2 replies I had were great. That picture told the whole story. It was the sending unit. what stumped me was when I reached back behind the head, I felt loose things that I couldnt detect by hand. That turned out to be my sending unit broken in half where the plastic meets the metal part. The picture in the reply told me there should be nothing loose back there. I had the car on the road Sunday morning. Still not sure why the unit broke. I never reached back there before. mounts are good. strange.

thanks again.
