Oil leak and knock help please
Oil leak and knock help please
Two seperate things Im sure but I noticed a oil leak kinda constant from the from coming from the bottom valve covers are dry so not that. Also it had a horrible exhaust leak at the donut is there a gasket in there?? Well i tighten the bolts were almost off it was so loose and sounded quieter but when i start it has kinda of aknock or clunk just for a split second like on something older when you set the timing wrong its kinda like that. Any ideas??? 96 z28 6 speed
Re: Oil leak and knock help please
you're gunna need to jack up the car and get under there i think. It could be coming from the front of the oil pan or maybe around the timing cover (around the opti seal possibly).
So are you saying the exhaust is making a knocking noise or the engine is knocking? What kind of exhaust setup do you have, are there headers on there?

All stock but it sounds like the engine just a split second like i said kinda like when you retard the timing on stuff that kinda wierd sound you get when you crank it but sound slike a knock.
Re: Oil leak and knock help please
So right when you start it it kncocks once or a few times then doesnt knock anymore after that. What about if while idling you tap the gas real quick?
The knock almost sounds like a loose torque converter bolt.

Re: Oil leak and knock help please
The front oil leak could be the crankshaft positin sensor (located low on the pass side of the timing cover) the front main seal (seal that the crank comes through the front timing cover, balancer pressed on there), any of the seals sealing the optispark or the waterpumps drive shaft. It is also common for the front rail of the intake manifold to leak as well. You just have to wipe and watch...lol. Sometimes it takes the motor to be warm and in rpms for the leak to occur (pressure inside crankcase).
As for the knock , if you have exhaust leaks the first kncock could be an exhaust leak as well. But if it goes away after start-up and never appears again it could be piston slap or a lifter that has drained down while it set. Really nothing to be alarmed about. Just be sure your oil pressure is solid never going below 20-25 at idle warm.
