Oil Leak, how can i tell what
Oil Leak, how can i tell what
I'm curious on the differences of visuals of an oil leak from the rear of the oil pan gasket, and then a main seal, how do i tell which it is, i have a little oil leak, and it seems really minor but its splashing all over the under of my car cuz of the fly wheel spinnin :P , when i look at the gasket it does seem a little wet and maybe a tad out... its so hard to tell honestly, i can while it clean and it will drip and i cant tell where it came from. any how im really nervous :P I finally got the car running after all the money and work put into it, drives great but that damn oil leak is killing me!!
Aw heck, thanks !

Re: Oil Leak, how can i tell what
If it's in the back of the engine, it could be from 3 places. The intake, the crank seal or the pan. I doubt if the pan were leaking that the oil would get on the flywheel. A couple of suggestions:
Look down from the top engine with a mirror at the back of the intake.
Remove the inspection plate at the bell housing and look in there.
Wash as much of the back side of the engine as you can with degreaser and perhaps high power water spray. Then add die to the oil. Using UV light, the die shows up like a sweat shirt at a wedding. The die you can usually get free from a mobile tool dealer like Snap-On. Then you can use any blue LED flash light like most auto parts stores or Bass pro shops has.
If you do end up having to take the tranny out to fix a seal, do the smart thing and put a new seal on the input shaft of the tranny. I feel that if your oil pan is not the cause, then it's probably coming from the intake. If so, don't use the cork seals, put the black RTV on instead.
