I agree completely. My 1218 fits fine with no probllem. (BTW, my car is normal ride height) I don't doubt that it is possible for the filter to become clogged. I just wonder if it is really the culprit of those engine problems/failures as is claimed.
What are the advantages of the larger filter? I currently use the K&N HP 2002, which I belive is the syock replacement size. Any issues with the longer filter and lowered cars?

Not on my lowered car with SLP headers. I just picked up my first K&N oil filter because i was at national auto and they only had them and frams.

I think a lot of the "junk" comments are mostly based on "urban legend"
this is prolly tru honestly my decision came becuase

1. i read about the horrer stories about them clogging up and ruining peoples engines
2. (THE MAIN REASON) i just like getting rid of anything under the hood i can to free up more space

anything thats going to make working on my car LESS time consuming and faster im down for

Okay, this post scares me....

Do you people honestly think a oil cooler does nothing? The factory cooler, although undersized does a lot for your car. Coolant temp is completely differnt than oil temp. There is SOME agreement between the two (ie coolant temp goes up when oil temp goes up) but you can still burn the hell out of your oil with yoru coolant at 170. I could hit (before my cooler) 287 degrees on my oil temp and be at 185 coolant temp - tell me that is a okay them .

If this was such a problem, how come none of the SCCA/NASA/MARRS guys haven't had a problem? Do you think it could be related to another issue in the motor or your maintince scheudal? I'm not aruging that the cooler isn't clogging but there is nothing in a healty motor that should have the ability to clog a cooler. It seems like there is another issue that is being missed.

Thumbs up Re: Oil cooler questions....

i got something to say about the removal process,

make sure when the stock oil cooler comes out that theres an orange gasket with it also if no reach up there and take it off as they tend to get stuck up there or else youll drop all the oil.

my dumbass mistake that almost cuased me an engine failure good thing i seen all the smoke that my car was leaving for the oil poring into the headers. just my .02 cents

Re: Oil cooler questions....

Junk it!!!! Ever wondered how some of the older Chevy's lived without one? The larger filter will do more good than a few degree's of cooling--if it cools a few degree's.

Re: Oil cooler questions....

Actually, for most here its biggest benefit (assuming it worked properly and didn't fail) is to heat the oil up more quickly after a cold start. The oil takes a long time to heat up--if you guys had oil temp gauges you'd probably feel bad about hammering on the car as soon as the water temp was up--you're doing it with cold oil.

For street driving a cooler certainly isn't needed on these cars. But if run hard for more than 12 seconds at a time, an effective cooler is a huge benefit if you want the engine to last. And no, a bigger filter won't accomplish the same thing. However, I've never seen any data to show if the stock cooler will either.

If it was a failure of execution, at least GM was trying to do the right thing....
