odometer stopped working

odometer stopped working
so i was driving down my street when i looked down and noticed that my mileage wasnt changing. niether the odometer or the tripometer work, all of the other guages are working fine. so after reseting my tripometer to 0, and still not getting any miles, i decided to give my dash a lil hit to see if i could maybe knock it lose or something. to my surprise, when i hit the top of my dash just above the odometer, my car completly died and I had to pull over to restart it. any ideas? thanx for any help
oh yea, I also did numerous site searches on my problem (so those of you who feel its necessary to tell me to use the search function can Nuck my Suts)

maybe the wire harness came lose on the back of the instrument panel. Take the panel off and check the harness and the pins in the harness make sure there not bent. As far as the car dying maybe a short?
