Water Pumps? Safest alternative?
Water Pumps? Safest alternative?
Well my opti has finally checked out and I am thinking its a good idea to replace the water pump while I am in there.
What are your opinions on Electric vs stock water pumps and what makes one safer than the other?
I know electric free's up some power, but if the water pump would ever go in the future, which would be the best bet to keeping my opti from getting drenched.
Also what parts are necessary for an electric pump install?
How do I plug the drive hole and what happens to the weep hole?
I hear Meziere's WP doesnt require housing modification?
Where is the cheapest place to find these items?
My car is a daily driver half the year, how long will this electric pump operate?
Sorry about all the questions but I need to order everything soon.

I'm affraid I'm too much of a novice right now to be trusted on anyone else's car
. Besides, I'm tied up trying to get my car back together (getting heads and cam from Phil @ AI). I'm also doing LT's, Borla, Opti, CSI, and many other goodies. I'm kind of learning as I go--just hope I don't screw anything up when I bolt it all back together
.
Good luck on the install!

I used the Ken Lowrance guide to install my CSI during my cam swap. Very well done, covers all the bases. Easy install. If you don't have a dremel (or knock off), I'd suggest picking one up. That thing was a big help. Not to mention the 1001 uses you'll find for it afterwards!
As for the durability, it's been 2 years and no problems with the CSI.

Thanks jkipp84, I like the CSI the best, I'll probably go with that. I also have that install guide, its very thorough.
How many miles you have on the CSI? And did you build in a warning light? Used a 1LE elbow too right?

I have been running with a CSI for over a year and while it does what its intended to do, flawlessly I might add... I still wish I had the stock waterpump instead. The reason is that inevitably the waterpump will fail and leave me stranded somewhere probably very far from home. If I had a stock pump then even if it starts to leak I could still drive home just fine. It is your call... i dont think 10 hp is worth the reliability you sacrafice going from mechanical to electric.
Do what you like, the thing I liked was I freed up some HP, now when I go to change the waterpump again if it takes me 15 minutes thats all it will be.
I never hooked up the light/buzzer type setup - although I might later (at least the light)
The stockers last quite a while, but can be time consuming to replace. The electric makes the job much simpler.

Yeah, 1LE elbow. I have about 14k miles on the CSI. I've seen a few suggest driving around with a spare pump, but I haven't gone that far just yet
No warning light/buzzer either. I do plan on installing the light this summer though, there's not much to it.
