O2 sensors installation?

ok i can see the driver side one, it looks like a simple one to get from underneath.. but how about the passenger side one any tricks to getting at it? looks like itld take someone with tiny hands to get it from up top, didnt look at it from the bottom yet though. and how do you tell if theyre worn out? mine (far as i know) are the originals with just under 150k miles on the clock. reason i think mine may be warn out is simply raspier exhuast (compared to other stock manifold duals ive heard) anyone know abetter way to tell? no service light... all advice is highly appreciated!

I think on the passenger side you get from the botttom. You might have to take off the starter, I don't remember. At 150,000 miles I would replace wether or not they are bad.

I had to do both from underneith the car, much easier, and yes, replacing them can make a world of difference.

warning to dual exhuast owners. do not take ur vehicle to napa to get the passenger 02 changed . ive got my duals run in the stock location.. theres no balancer pipe.. yet in order to put in the passenger side 02 due to where i "dualed out" my exhaust they had to drop "both sides" (wtf?!) to change the one senser.. and even then they didnt know if theyld be able to.. tally up $100 to change pass. 02 sensor... my reply... "bye" though they did go ahead and change the drivers side.. -_- sigh.. and i thought i liked their shop =/ ok done ranting now, guess ill have to change it myself this weekend funny thing is i only let them do it cause i dint wanna fool with the pass side myself.. figured meh why just have one done *shrug* save me some trouble and let them do both lol

Thats sounds like about an hour and a half of labor. That is the bad thing about alot of shops, it seems they kind of guess a labor rate when it has to do with aftermarket stuff and labor costs get high really quick on these cars.

Re: O2 sensors installation?

i got the pass side off from the top - so easy it was funny - just need the right combination of extensions and swivels. make sure you soak them with penetrant for the day then tackle them in the afternoon ideally. they may be hard to get loose. make sure you don't force them too much or you'll take part of the bung with you. just easily work them back and forth until you've worked them out in one piece, shooting them with penetrant along the way.

Re: O2 sensors installation?

If it won't even budge with penetrant and a regular ratchet, should I try to use a breaker bar? I don't want to break it or anything and I surely don't want the bung to come with it. Any advice?

Re: O2 sensors installation?

I just changed the pass side(hopefully only one) on my 93 t/a. Really almost impossible to get from underneath because of exhaust routing(stock), Bought O2 sensor offset wrench/socket that didnt get too good a grip either, ended up using it for reinstallation and final tightening. Finally put 7/8 deep socket on it with swivel and about 18" of extention and it finally broke free. I think it was the original sensor so it was pretty stubborn. It seemed to be less hassle to cut wire and pull off metal shield to leave just a nut (more or less) to have to access. then tool choices for removal can be socket or possibly wrench if you can get one in there and move it enough to break it loose. I havent looked at the 94 yet..does it have one or 2

Re: O2 sensors installation?

94 has one on each side, and thank you whoever said stock exhaust was still impossible... cause mine is run in the stock place with duals, chopped about 1in. off the y-pipe and run it out.. ill tell em to try it from the top tomorrow

Re: O2 sensors installation?

Careful with the penetrating oil...if you get it on new 02's it can ruin them, at least in my experience. Clean the bungs well if you can after you get the old 02's out.
