O2 Sensors

Alright, maybe I can get someone to explain to me exactly how these things work. I have a '93 Z28 and I did a longtube header install about a year ago and I replaced the O2 sensors with Bousch brand. My car has a stumble from 1200 rpms to 2500 rpms. I unplugged both sensors yesterday and I have no SES light and my car takes off like a rocket. Why is this? Why would the O2 sensors cause a stumble when plugged in and run fine unplugged? Does it hurt anything to run it like this? Do I need to try a different brand? I'm confused. Thanks for any help.

You most likely have a vacuum leak or something else is out of whack so the 02 sensors cannot adjust to the desired air fuel ratio.

There are numerous engine problems that can cause the O2 sensors to cause the engine to run poorly. The solution is not to get rid of the O2 sensors. The solution is to find out what is causing the problem. Misfires, exhaust leaks before the O2 sensors, and faulty sensors and wiring can all cause the O2 sensors to read incorrectly ("false" lean or "false" rich), forcing the ECM to add or subtract fuel that should be added or subtracted.

When they work correctly, they help compensate for minor changes in the way the engine runs... variations in fuel pressure, minor vacuum leaks, or aging IAT and MAP sensors on your 93 speed-density ECM.
