o2 sensor removal

okay, this is my first time replacing my o2 sensors. i'm sure theyre way over due. anyways, i got underneath the car today to remove them and i cant keep the damn socket from twisting off the sensor (if that makes any sense). ive got the o2 sensor socket (the long one with a slit in the side) and it seems like its flexing and wont hold onto the sensor real well. and this is just on the driver side sensor. i dont even want to try the passenger side sensor!!! any advice for removing these damn things? thanks guys.

I used a 7/8" wrench to get mine out. Be careful though...I removed a good portion of my thumb when my hand slipped off the wrench while fighting with the passenger side sensor. Spray it down with some WD40 or PB Blaster and let it sit a while to loosen it up a bit.

were you able to get the open end of the wrench in there to the sensor. it doesnt look like theres a lot of room to work with on that passenger side. thats the biggest PITA part about these damn cars. no room to work on them. anyways, i havent tried the passenger side yet and i havent gotten the driver side one off yet with that damn socket. the only way ill get that one off is by cutting those old wires off and using a full socket or the closed end of the wrench. theres no way to get the open end of the wrench on the sensor with going at it straight on. the closed end of the wrench has a enough of a bend on it so that the wrench will clear all of the other crap around it (hopefully). hmm. ill get to it saturday. ill be working all day tomorrow. any more ideas guys? thanks.

Run the engine to heat up the exhaust tubing. This will expand the fitting and make it easier to remove the sensor. Just don't burn your fingers!

Soaking the threads with a little PB Blaster or WD40 may help as well.
