Now how did that happen

I realize this isn't entirely engine related. but bare with me.
I was pulling off my intake yesterday, seperating it between the MAF and the
intake elbo. And there in my stock MAF (with the honeycomb still in it), calmly sitting on the element was a live wasp.

How did it get there? How is it that it was still around in the middle of november, and how was it able to overcome the engine vacuum?

Re: Now how did that happen

It possibly came in through the Airpump route. They stick around but move very slowly when cold, they actually hibernate.

Re: Now how did that happen

maybe he said "warmth, I'm sleeping there!!" and got sucked in the intake some how??? Maybe the airpump?? Kinda like the 'ole cat under the hood story you've always heard about!!

Re: Now how did that happen

but there is no air pump before the intake or MAF...isnt the air pump after all of these components..../
THIS BRINGS ME TO A QUESTION, WHEN YOU TURN THE CAR ON AND THE AIR PUMP COMES ON, THE INTAKE SUCKS THE AIR THROUGH BECAUSE OF THE AIR PUMP, BUT HOW DOES THIS PROCESS WORK THOUGH????

Re: Now how did that happen

AIR pump takes air FROM the intake tract [before the MAF]and pumps it into the exhaust manifolds..

Re: Now how did that happen

so it sucks air through the engine so that suction begins at the intake through the MAF and into the throttle body and into the manifold...right?

I'd check all the ducting/filter, etc. You probably have a hole somewhere.

No.. think of the AIR pump as 'bypassing' the engine intake tract [ the ENGINE is an 'air pump' also, so don't get confused here, manifold vacuum, vacuum at the MAF, TB, and intake are generated by the engine itself....]
The AIR pump pulls air from the intake before the MAF[from the CAI elbow if you have one] and then it pumps thru the AIR pump then it goes thru 2 pipes/check valves/hoses to the exhaust manifolds.. [ bypassing the engine with SOME air.. the engine still has the same manifold vacuum tho] that's those 2 pipes you see sticking up out of the tops of the manifolds..
The purpose is to provide more air for the catalytic converter to help heat it up [it needs to be hot to work] this only runs a few minutes on a cold start..
Hope this clears it up for you...

Re: Now how did that happen

Well, the air pump was sealed off long ago, and I was watching the car the entire time. but had been running it recently without the air filter.
however that still doesn't explain how he got through the MAF or what he was doing at my house in november.

Watch out there may be a nest under the hood or behind the fenders. No BS!!! I know a couple people that had wasps build nests under the fender where you cant get at. Id keep a can or two of wasp killer around for a lil while. Them suckers can get mean. Have you ever noticed em around your car before??
