Not turning over need some help

I posted on another board and didnt get any help so im retrying here

Ok so i have a 1995 z28 rarely ever gives me a problem besides sometimes missing alittle around 5k thought it was my opti but havent had achance to change it. yesterday i was on the interstate and notice my rpm and tach were bouncing around thought it was odd and was going to look it up when i got home. stopped got a bite to eat and went to start my car and it would start run for half a second and die repeated that twice intill it finaly started with a miss. halfway home it started sputtering and couldnt touch the gas or get over 35mph but soon went away. noticed battery tach and mph gauge were bouncing everywhere on the way home. got home turned it off tried to start it back and it would start and die and did it again and on the third try everything went comepletly dead besides the radio. so now when i turn my key on i dont here the pump priming, the guage warning light doesnt come on when u first turn the key and when u rotate all the way over it doesnt tick or anything from the starter. im thinking pcm but advise wuold be great thanks in advance

What condition is the battery in? Is it fully charged? Have you measured the battery voltage?
Is there any starter life if you try and jump it?

If you can get it running, measure the battery voltage to determine if the charging system is working.

Re: Not turning over need some help

I dont have a voltmeter around but i did put it on charge with no change and my radio will turn all the way up without cutting off and i have a sub with 1500 watts pushing it that sounds like it has plenty of power
Before the gauges went flat it had plenty of power and was turning over normaly but would only run for a second or 2 before it died

I had trouble with my pcm-ign fuse a few times before I found what was going on. Fuse was not blown but was corroded or something was causing a bad connection with it. When it is bad fuel pump will not prime with key on but fuel pump would prime by jumping it at the priming connecter under hood. My laptop also would not communicate with the pcm at that point so it ruled out being a vats issue. I was left thinking it was pcm because of all the symptoms but went back through things and just cleaned that fuse up and put some dielectric grease on it and not a problem since. Mine never happened when running but I realized the times it wouldnt start I didnt hear pump prime. I had pulled the fuse one or two times not knowing which pcm fuse reset it(pcm bat). I would start with those two fuses and then proba ly check to see if power is to that location. I would also see if you can read pcm for codes

Ok im going to get a test light to check for power on both sides of all my fuses
I dont have access to a scanner right now but will try to get one out tomorrow morning i dont think my pcm is getting power because of everything that doesnt work that runs off of the pcm

The check gauges light doesn't run off the PCM.

When you turn the key to run, what works on your dash, what lights come on? Does the "SECURITY" light flash? Does the SES light come on for a few seconds, then turns off?

do you get any of the other electric items working light headlights dome light as your stereo may have a seperate feed and your amp does. I really dont know how the electronic side of our cars work but I would start looking at what is getting power and what is not. I would also check grounds. With my minimal knowledge of the system the things that stick out to me is if pcm has power, if fuse panel has power, if ignition has power,. Might have fried a wire. I once was having my alternator wire rub the pulley and it nearly cut it in half. Your symptoms do sound like a crazy electric surge or short or drops in signal. I guess my limited knowledge I would note what has power and what doesnt and then look over wires from the battery especially in areas that could get damaged or cut or burned.

Re: Not turning over need some help

Sounds like it may be a problem with the ignition switch, or the connector for the ignition switch.

Re: Not turning over need some help

I found a test light and found my pcm fuses werent getting power in or outside the car and traced it back to the ignition switch on the diagram.. Looked over at how to replace it on shbox and of course it described all my symptoms!
Thanks to the 2 guys above this that pointed to the ignition switch i just haddent checked back on this morning before i started looking over it
