is this normal?(gas consumption question)

I filled up some gas last night, and I reset the Speedometer. after just 7 miles of driving, the needle had moved noticably. when I filled it up, I had about 10 gallons in there, so I'm gonna keep track of it. I justput my car on a lift in auto class and my teacher pointed out the original fuel filter. the car has 83k miles on it, so would replacing that improve MPG?

yeah if its never been changed, injectors could also be clogged up some, if u have a stat lower than 195 that could be part of gas consumption EGR valve if its old and all carboned up could alos hve something to do with it as could ur cats.

If you are hitting your brakes when you check your gauge, the gas probably shifted to the front of the tank giving you a different gas reading, or if you checked you fuel gauge while pressing the accelerator, the gas could of moved to the back of the tank and messed up the gauge. The LT1 gas tank is in the shape of a " V " so a half tank on the guage is really 1/3 or maybe even a 1/4. If you think its bad gas mileage, your O2 sensors are ready to be replaced and will make a hell of a difference.

He is going to have a thermostat lower than 195º, since the stock one is 180º.
