Nominal operating temperature? Is this too hot?

I put in a new thermostat and got a coolant flush and the car hovers between the MIDDLE bar and the one after it. Is this running hot?

When my car was stock, yeah summer temps of 90-95º had me sitting right at 200-210ºF on the gauge. What's your ambient temps looking like in your neck of the woods?

Just south of Houston, Texas, so, it gets really hot and humid down here. It was like high 80s today, I believe.

You also need to include driving conditions. Are going 100 in a school zone or sitting at the drive-thru window?

Today was mainly city driving. Mostly between 32-55 mph. Although, I did jump on I-45 for a few miles and it stayed in about the same spot. When I got home tonight, I had parked the car and was dicking with the A/C and the fans came on. So, I know the fans STILL work.

Use a scan tool to check the temperature that the PCM is seeing. Fans should come on at 226°.

Don't abuse TTT, like the sticky at the top of the forum says.

When I had my 396, it ran no more than 185 in the summertime...in 95 degree heat and 100% humidity. Of course it had a 160 thermo, electric fans on all the time, and an electric waterpump

my car gets to about 200-210 at an idle when i've been driving for awhile, but as soon as i start moving again it drops to below the half way and down to just above the 1/4 line (but my heat gauge is from 100-260)

When my car was stock it would always run at about 210 dgrees (1/2) when it was warmed up and I was driving on the highway. However, when I would be sitting in traffic, it would hover between 210 and 230 degrees (3/4), exactly as you describe it, since the highspeed fan is programmed to come on somewhere in the 230 degree range if I remember correctly. I was worried that my engine was heating up too much, but after some research on this forum it seems it's totally normal, and the car was designed to operate in that temperature range.

Although I still decided that I wanted my car to run a bit cooler (it would get REALLY hot sometimes after for example a 45 minute drive in traffic). So I just bought a 160 degree thermostat and manual fan switch and installed them. Now when I'm on the highway the car stays right at about 185 (1/4) and in traffic I just turn on the fans and don't usually let it get above 210.

Did you get the correct t'stat for the "reverse cooled" LT1?

Check Shoebox's Tech Pages for the differences between the LT1 stat and a conventional one.

You got a lawn mower thermostat? I didn't even know they made them!

j/k

Did you look on my page? It should have answered your question if it was the thermostat of the correct, long design.

Haha, well, it's already in there. I THINK it was the longer design. I think the fans are supposed to come on at 226, how can I reprogram them to come on at 180 or so?
