noise after 3.73 gear install

just installed a 3.73 ring and pinion set, have some intermitnt noise when driving . not constant goes in and out. want make noise in reverse. what did i miss, set backlash .0008-.0012. pinion was tightened down too no slop and when spun turn 1 revolution. new pionion bearing, did not change the bearing in the carrier and used old crush sleeve. noise does not get louder even after giveing it hell and going 6-7k. any ideas thanks. will post till fixed- this going to be a bitch

If you have a backlash of .012, that is on the loose side for a 10 bolt and can make some noise, and reusing the crush sleeve was probably a bad decision. Some people don't check their coast pattern, but I think it is important to a good setup.

Did you mean "won't (doesn't?) make noise in reverse"? Did you mean 0.008 - 0.012" backlash?

sorry man my grammar, spelling, and math sucks, I have google-spell check and calculators so im good. backlash was set at .012, dont think thats the noise if anything might be to tight i was thinking the bearing in the carrier wasnt changed so maybe thats it. anywho as soon as i get time im tearing it back down thanks.

Re: noise after 3.73 gear install

sorry to bump this back up but i will post on my thread until my problem gets fixed. So i tore the ring and pinion back down- things wrong i found-didnt retreive shim from old pinion gear where the bearing seats.2-i didnt use a new crush sleeve.3.i didnt replace the outer bearing that sits behind the seal in the reaend housing. Fixed all the above tighted the pinion to no slop-set backlash at .010-.012"- torques main caps to 60-65 lb. drove it down the rode noise is not there anymore however it whines while coasting to a stop, where it use to whine while accelerating. total opposite problem now. ? is should i worry aboutit really not to loud, and what could that be. Felt the rearend all over for heat build up but no excessive heat feels normal. Thanks for any reply

Re: noise after 3.73 gear install

Did you set the pinion depth? Did you measure backlash at several point around the ring gear? Did you check the contact pattern on both the drive and coast sides?

You need to research how to set up a set of gears. What does your gear pattern look like with paint on it? What did you use to measure the pinion drag without the carrier in?
You will always get noise if you don't set it up correctly.

used dial indicator, tighted pinion nut down to no slop while i was still ablle to rotate the the rotate yoke and it would spin the pinion 1/2-3/4 turn? did everything by a gm article off the web. they set up a 10 bolt. 1rst time i put gears in was really loud- second time not as near as loud at least its toelrable. what should i be missing here

Re: noise after 3.73 gear install

Read this article, pay close attention to the part about pinion preload and gear mesh pattern. I've done a hundred of these but its too much to type. This covers it pretty well.
