HV pump what a piece of crap, i actually had taken pieces from my stock pump off and put it on the HV just so i could use the stock pick up. I suppose ive learned a lesson that everyone should know about. I was examining the oil pump drive gear it looks like it can be interchanged or something with a little tommy riggin, is there a gear out there that can withstand a HV pump. haha, well i ordered a new one anyways and a soon as i get it im slappin it back it so i can run another 30k then strip again

I actually used a distributor gear for a 91 Camoro with TPI. I figured it had to be the same type of steel since they both used roller cams. It costed about $8. It fit perfect and worked fine. Iwould think one of the hardened gears designed for race engines might work. I didn't want to take a chance so I decided to ditch the POS HV.

did you order a stock gear, or is there a better/hardened version?

The only place i could find a drive gear was Gmpartsdirect, they seemed to have the best deal compared to the dealership who wanted to charge almost double. So the drive im getting is going to have a another stock gear on it. The gear i have had 140000 miles on it, dont know what the life expectancy on this part is though, Im running fully synthetic oil so maybe that will prolong the life of the new one.

So luckily ever thing went well once i started up the engine with the new oil pump drive gear, i was praying to god that i didnt spin another rod bearing or mess up my lifter or damage my valves. But all is well and thanks everyone for the feed back on my situation.

I did not realize what a POS the drive gear was until this week. I am hoping that I will be ok with a 10% overdriven HV pump.(the lower of the norm HV.) I had to choose that one, since the stock replacement casting is weak. This gave me the right pump/pickup combo for my pan.

It seems that somebody needs to make a HD drive gear badly for our cars.
