NJ Inspection Experience

My car was inspected by the state of NJ a week before I put my FLP headers on. I put the block off plate in the Borla and prepared to take my chances. The car still had the stock manifold/dual cat set up. While I was waiting, I was watching them inspect my car(they make you get out of the car). The one guy was looking under the car with a mirror on a stick for a while. Finally...he calls me over. "What did you do...take off your catylitic converter? I only see one...and there's 2 pipes" This is what he says to me. Stunned...I opened the hood and showed both guys the other cat. I dont think they even knew what they were looking at. At that moment I realized...I would have been better off if I had my longtubes and they could at least see both cats! Just wanted to give you some insight into the minds of NJ Inspection station workers...dont think there's much to worry about when it comes to the legal issues of cat placement.

An even funnier story. I went through Delaware inspection with the 97 car (you can see the mods on my signature). It obviously failed. Once they realized I had so many things not ready then put it on the smog check. Yeah, it read 941 and the limit was 220. Anyway, they say I can take it to a place that has a certified DE emissions tech and spend $650 on getting it worked on and they would waive my emissions. So I went to a place produced receipts for my new JE dished blower pistons, CompCams custom grind cam and 50# injectors and told them I replaced this stuff to help emissions. They didn't even look at the car just asked if I put the stuff in and stamped my forms and charged me $65. I went back to DMV and they tagged my car for 2 years.

The problem with NJ is that you have to deal with two completely different sets of inspectors......

You met the first kind..... couldn't find his a$$ with both hands. Had no idea what he was looking at.

Next, while driving along, minding your own business, you will meet the second kind.... MOBILE DMV INSPECTION TEAM. They set up on the side of the road, pull over likely cars, and subject them to a full visual, plus a rolling dyno emissions right there on the side of the road. The guys in that team are fully informed, and have all the reference documents they need. They will be able to spot a set of LT's, and any other items that "don't belong".

I stopped driving my car on the public roads in NJ about 2 years ago for exactly that reason. It was built to pass rolling emissions, and could... 500HP 230/242 114LSA solid roller cam... and with dual high flow 3" CarSound cats it passed rolling emissions. EGR, AIR, and EEC fully intact. The only thing it couldn't pass was a "visual", since it left the factory with only one cat, and virtually none of the aftermarket equipment in the car had a CARB-EO certificate number.

Thank you for reassuring my comfort level with buying
CARB OBD II approved cats. Well worth the extra money.
