Newbie needs some help with camshaft/tuning 1997 Z/28

Hi everybody,
I am new to this forum and am seeking information about a car that I am building. I have a 1997 Z/28 that I bought new and have only added exhaust, cold air intake and a shift kit when the car was new. The parts are from SLP back in 1997.
My car is an automatic and kind of a garage puppy as its never been in the rain or snow.
Now I am getting the itch for more power as my kids are grown up and I have some extra cash.
My plan:
-Port the stock heads or get some Edelbrocks.
-Change the camshaft. I want one that has a cool/rough idle and makes good power.
-Headers probably Pacesetter.

My question is how do you tune for the modifications on a 1997 Z/28?
Do I buy a tuner or can I bring my car to a dyno and have it tuned there?
I apologize for my ignorance but I am and "old school" pre computer guy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You in advance,
Jack

You would need "Tunercat for OBD 2" which now is retailed buy "Jet" or "LT1 Edit" to tune your car. These will usually come with software for your laptop and a cable that hooks into your OBD 2 port under the drivers side dash. I recently sold my 97 trans am and have everything you would need (Tunercat for OBD 2 and cable plus starter tunes) to tune your own car. PM me and I will make you a good deal.

Lots of shops can tune the car after the mods, dyno tuning is the best way to tune but it can get expensive, i would send off for a mail order tune from a well known company such as PCMforless or madz28, they will get you close enough. As far as the heads go i would send them to be ported, and many places sell kits with matching cam like the LE1, or LE2, packages(*from Elliot protworks).

DO yourself a favor and never buy any Edlebrock stuff for your LT1.

Go with a LE1-LE2 setup

X2 on PCMFORLESS. I had them tune mine and it runs PERFECT after cam and headers.
