Talking Newbie has some questions

Hello all, i have been lurking for a few weeks now, so i decided to post.

Let me first say that i am third genner by heart. My 91 is my pride and joy.

But who says you can have your cake and eat it too?

In mid december i picked up a 1997 30th anniversary Z28. White/orange stripes, white leather, white wheels. And my fave part the LT1/T56 combo.

I bought the car off of a good friend for 5200 bucks. It has 102,000 miles on it. The car is perfect except for a very worn drivers seat.

Now after driving it for about a month, the darn thing seems slow. I guess i just got used to all the power.

It does have a slight rear intake leak that i will be fixing soon. After that i would like to start modding.

My goal would be a solid mid 13 second ride. After doing some searchs, i have decided that a CAI, headers, and a nice cat back could get me close to that. Of course i complete tuneup will be first. It boggles my mind when people mod their cars when they are not even in a good state of tune

Anyways, i am open to any other suggestions to help me reach my 13.5 goal.

Great site, seems like a great bunch of people

That sounds like a good start to me. Maybe a mail order tune too, along with your tune up.

Cam is the best way to get alot of HP, but it won't do much good if you can't flow in or out of the engine efficiently. So before a cam you need CAI, headders, cat back, and to get the most out of your cam, head work. Go ahead and do the bolt ons first, then worry about a cam later. I'm saving up for a cam myself.

if it's feeling slow...may be worth the $$ for a good tune up...plugs wires and all that jazz

then you'll be starting on a level field

I agree, especially with that many miles on the car I'm sure its in need of new plugs and wires. The mods you listed should be good enough to break 13.5 easily. Theres no need to make any adjustments in the computer because, well theres nothing to adjust until you get into cams and head work, but first thing's first---bolt-ons.

Sounds like you have gotten good advice so far and are on the right track. With that many miles you may also want to do shocks if they have not been replaced recently.

These guys are great. Said everything I was wanting to say. Like he said earlier, a tune-up might be a good idea, and for first mods...the headers, CAI, and exhaust are a must.

Yeah, if you decide to do headers, its a great time to do plugs and wires as well. I think headers/cai/exhaust/gears, and maybe a cam down the road would make a nice quick car for you.

Wow, great pick up my friend! Just curious, is she a 6 speed and a hardtop, too? That would be a great combo! I agree with everyone else here. I'm in the same boat as you with my '96 Z28 where I just want to get some good bolt-ons to be a mid 13 daily driver. I would also consider some drag radials for trips to the track and definitely change the fuel filter during your tune up. Good luck with it!

By the way, where in Chicago are you from??? Check out www.fbodyowners.com if you're interested in meeting other local Chicago F-Body guys and gals and there's also the Illinois Camaro Club. Great people, awesome cars, and many, many, many events during the year. Link in signature.
