Unhappy newbie buildup questions

hi everyone, this is my first post here, and i'm hoping that someone can direct me in the right direction here..

i have an 89 GMC sierra with an LT1 /T56 swap done. well, the engine lost oil pressure, and is knocking like a sob, so i'm pulling it out next weekend.

the engine is going to be rebuilt professionally as i don't have the time or facilities to do it myself. i ask you this:

i have a budget of 4000.00 to spend on the parts and labor. i'm looking to get 450 hp/tq out of this motor, and it will be for a daily driver (just pleasure, i have a work vehicle) i don't mind 93+ octaine fuel only, as that's what i always put in all my cars.. i'm at a loss on where to start on the rebuild.. my main concern is that it pass CT smog regs. as the motor stands now, it has the lt4 hotcam kit, stock heads, and tuning done. besides a oil pump, i think that it's all stock. the seller told me that it was dynojetted at 325/325 rw power'tq. and seemed like it before the head gaskets went and all hell broke loose

can i please have a rough idea of what i'll need to buy in order to achieve those #'s? i plan on doing this only once and i want it to last, but i want that extra 50-60 hp or so. i'm at a loss on what parts to get and stay within my budget, is a stroker capible of those #'s and still pass emmisions? i wouldn't mind a nice loopy idle at the stoplight either maybe not stroke it and jsut do headwork? bigger tb too? i don't know where to start, so please give me any advise you may have, thanks!

Welcome to CZ28.com

You will get the best results by posting in the "engine specific" tech forum.... in this case "LT1 Tech". Moving it over there to get you started off on the right foot....

Make sure you do all the free mods. buy a used LT4 conversion kit port n polish, CC305 cam w/ 1.6 RR's, get a mail order tune from Madwolf (a member/advertiser on here), OR if you can get a hook-up on parts n labor go for the 383. Just my .02.

lol, thanks for the move mod, and grease punk, what free mods?
i'm all about free right now .

ok guys , basicly what i'm after is a list of components that have been proven to produce a decent amount of power , and still pass smog. so far , the best package i've seen is the lt4 kit rom summit. is there anything better out there? there has to be.. i'll keep searching the forums later tonight after work. i need to make a decision on my parts, so i can order them next weekend. thanks so much for the help guys, and thanks for the welcome

Just keep your full setup right now of the hotcam kit, and take the heads off and have them ported. That should be enough for now while it gets rebuilt.

You have all the free mods done now, lt4 hotcam, 1.6RR/lt4 springs, pcmforless tuned computer, lt4 knock module, meziere electric pump, mid length headers, hi flow cats, flow 40s. Some other little things that I am forgetting also. I think with a nice port job on the heads it will get you where you want.

werd, i was either thinking of a cnc job for the heads, or port and polish. BTW, i talked my friend out of selling his stroker, he was a dummy for wanting to sell it anyway. just gonna rebuild this one, it'll be cheaper and the same quality rebuild as the other one, plus less headaches.. if the heads are cracked or badly warped, then i'll get the lt4's or something better, but for now, i'll get a nice p&p on the intake/heads, and call it a day. i'm gonna go talk to the shop now and see bout that head job..

hey, if ya get a chance, and you catch up w/ bryan, then see if he knows if herter will re-tune it for me if needed for free. i think i'll have to go through bryan to get it done free....

How can you tell he has them all done? He has no sig.

The free mods are Throttle Body coolant bypass, descreen maf sensor, and I forget the rest....here's a great page just browse around it..http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech1.html

oh yeah, Edelbrock makes the TES line of headers thaey are 50 state legal for emissions, actually edelbrock makes alot of 50 state legal stuff, I'd check them out.

As for the LT4 kit from Summit, **** on thier price...it's $2100 from gmpartsdirect.com, i'm sure someone has the link on here.

I'd just go with that and some other cheap stuff like pullies, air foil, stuff that you wont feel a difference when you put them on individually, but all at once it might. CAI, cut-out are some other good and inexpensive ones.

That explains it. lol.

Almost forgot, check out SLP's website for emissions friendly performance. I feel dumb that I didn't mention that before, SLP=Street Legel Performance.

well after searching all theese places, and talking to a couple of engine builders, i think i have my solution..

it will be stroked with the eagle kit, bored .030 over, decked , align honed (sp?) , splayed caps, and balenced. new oil pan 7 qt, obviously a new oil pump, intake/heads will be ported and polished , keeping the 1.6 rockers, bumping up to a bigger cam than the lt4. possibily a bigger Throttle body if needed. now i was told that this CAN be tuned to pass emmissions up here in CT, just depends on the cam. i want a little lopeing, but not the crazy truck bouncing type.. lol. this should put me close to if not over 400 hp/tq with the proper tuneing

few more questions luke, how long was the hotcam in before i bought it? did bryan ever replace the optispark that you know of?
(i think he said he did..)

does anyone think i'll have to run bigger injectors with this setup?
or just increase fuel pressure?

any more info will help me.. the engine is headed down to the shop early next week...

You will be close on injectors, I recommend 30lb's for that setup (cc305).

The motor was built at the same time it was swapped into the truck, so it was a good while. The optispark was new (and its been converted to the 95 vented style also) at the time of install.
