new opti problems

Put a new gm opti on and fired it up and it's still stumbling and running rough. No wires are crossed or appear to be arcing. And on top of that I got a dtc16. Any ideas what to check or what could be wrong. I know the plugs need changing but was gonna try to make it till Monday cause I ran out of daylight

Re: new opti problems

N can someone point me to the thread where the guy was designing the crank trigger setup or whatever it was. I looked but can't find it. Just want to check other options cause it will be a minute before I can save up for the 24x setup

dtc16: distributor ignition ( low resolution plus ) maybe your coil ?
I'm no mechanic so you might want to see what some of the pro's on here have to say

Re: new opti problems

Sometimes the opti wire harness can get corroded. Start there first. Chances are that if the car runs the same with the new opti that the harness was the problem and NOT the opti.

It pays to do proper prior diagnosis before throwing parts at the car.

I know what ya mean but it was replaced last time I did plugs n wires. Maybe I need to replace it again. But hell it wouldn't even crank this morning. Don't know what the heck is wrong with this thing!

No, DTC 16 is not for the coil. It sets when the PCM can not find the low resolution pulse signal from the optical cam position sensor in the Opti for two crank revolutions.

Did you clear the code AFTER you replace the Opti? If you did, and the code came back, check the short Opti harness (from the gray connector on the bracket on the passenger side of the intake manifold to the Opti) for corroded or damaged pins, as indicated above.

What do you mean by "won't crank"? The starter will not engage the flywheel?

Re: new opti problems

Did you clear the code after the new opti was installed? If you did and the code came back it is most likely a bad opti or your opti harness. Do you have any codes now? If you have no codes and are running a msd coil, swap it out for a stock one. There has been alot of issues with msd ones.

Re: new opti problems

If DTC 16 is active, and not "stored", it will prevent the engine from starting. The PCM shuts down the fuel system.

Re: new opti problems

I checked for ignition coil fire but got nothing. I'm going to take the coil off and take it back to the store and swap it out(Borg warner) and if it runs I'm goin to get another delco coil. Have had no luck with msd they always crack. I cleared the code and it hadn't showed back up yet but I haven't got it running either to see.

Re: new opti problems

Found out it was the coil plug. Replaced the pigtail and when I did I just twisted the wires together and it started up n ran pretty decent. Let it run about 45 minutes since it ain't ran in months. Went out the next day and connected the wires together the right way and now it won't hardly run....what the hell?! And now my o2 volts are staying 000 and running rough but when I unplug the maf it gets a lil better and the numbers actually move then
