new opti and electric wp problem

I installed a new opti and electric water pump the other day and had a few problems. The opti was not brand new, I got it from a friend who had it on his car for no more than 2000 miles with no problems. The car turned right on, but both fans came on and the ses light was on. I turned it off and added some more coolent. Turnd it on, same thing. Turned it off, added a bit more coolent, turned it on, same thing again, but then the car died on me. It wont start up again. I tried new coil with no luck. Anyone know what my problem could be?
Thanks,
Matt

You need a scan to see what the code(s) are.

Can I just pick up a code scanner from the local part store or do I need some special one? Thanks.

No, that only works on 1993s.

Just for grins, check your underhood fuses to be sure none are blown.
