new engine problems...oil pressure

hey guys,

i have a new engine i'm building, and i've some questions/concerns....this is the summit kit

the engine is:

1996 LT1 2 bolt main
.30 over bore
std cap and rod bearings (speed pro)
speed pro forged pistons
stock PM rods
speed pro rings

oil system is:

miladon oil pan 7 qt
melling HV with miladon pick up
miladon windage tray
rear oil deflector !!!!!!!! mounts between oil pump and block.
ac delco filter

valvetrain is:

lloyd elloit heads 264/184
GM 847
cc 1.52 rr
comp r lifters

my problem is that when i try to prime the oil pump with the drill and flat head extension i cant get any oil pressure on my mechanical guage i have hooked up. the block was preped by the local machine shop. i talk to the machienst about everything... *****... plugs... everything... he said it was good to go!!

how can i make sure i have oil pressure if i didnt have the guage hooked up right?

what way should i have turned the oil pump driveshaft?

please guys... i have 8.5 quarts of oil in this thing that i dont wanna remove.

P.S engine isnt in the car yet.. still on stand

First thing that comes to mind...do you have a reversible drill? If you pump it the wrong way your pump out of the engine than in...

I know there are plugs and stuff the can lower engine oil pressure if not installed, but can't think of any that would not allow any...

you need to use a actual oil pump primer to read any kind of pressure

there is a oil galley that crosses the distributor/oil pump drive hole

without that, you are pushing so much out the galley that the gauge wont move

oh, and you need to spin it clockwise

Does your oil pump primer have the little cylinder on it that sits on the primer shaft by the cam? If not, you won't be able to get any pressure. The oil will dump out at the rear of the lifter galleys before they can pressurize.

I was able to get ~40psi or more with a cordless drill.

with the primer and a cordless, with the melling pump and a tight motor you should get close to 50psi

Jeggs and Summit both sell the primer tool for about $30. You might try Autozone or PepBoys too if you need it quick.
