New Clutch

Hello everyone! Been a while since i've been online. I just had an SLP clutch installed and with the clutch pedal out and in neutral i can hear a noise, almost like the clutch is lightly touching the flywheel. Otherwise everything seems fine. Any ideas what this could be? Thank you for any help, and good luck with your cars. Fingers

I would say it is your pilot bearing from the sound of it. If you kit didn't come with a new one when you replaced the clutch, I would say there is a really good chance that is what it is, these cars are notorious for it.

The part is only like <$10, but you have to drop the tranny and all that mess

Well it could be the pilot bearing/bushing, which would need replacement. That is what centers your transmission input shaft and if that goes then your clutch disc will weight down your input shaft and it will be off-center. You can snap an input shaft that way or develop some other problems. So yes, it needs attention if that's what it is. I think if it was the pilot bearing/bushing it would be noisy in all gears, not just neutral.

It could also be the normal neutral rattle (which is probably is for my .02). If this is your first aftermarket clutch, you will really notice it. The T56 makes a lot of vibration and aftermarket clutches don't have predampers to filter out neutral rattle. So if its this, there's nothing wrong, that's just what you get when you upgrade.

That would be my guess as well, what PatriotTA said.. Does it stop when you press down on the clutch? Mine also does it in 1st until about 1800 rpm. Just something you have to live with when your putting 300hp through her.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, where did you have it done and how much did they charge?

Hey guys, thank you so much for your replies. The shop where i had it put in said it's normal until the flywheel wears a little???? I just know it never did this with my stock clutch. I have never had a clutch replacement before, and everyone says it just feels different to me. I hope it's nothing to serious. Thanks again for your replies, and good luck with your cars. Fingers

Maybe the shop meant til the clutch wears a little?? The flywheel is cast iron, its not intended to wear at all. The disc is meant to wear, but it will always have neutral rattle, due to the absence of the predamper springs. Either way they are wrong.

The stock clutch had predampers so it filtered the noise out. It was always there, but the disc was engineered to filter it. The new one doesn't filter it.

Like importeater and I said, if it only does it with the clutch engaged while in neutral you're fine, but if its noisy all the time, it might be the pilot bearing/bushing. HTH
