New Best, but bye bye trans!!!

Hey everyone I finally got my junk to the track to test the suspension/rear mods/changes I made since the Spring...Here's the best pass, but all 7 were pretty much identical:

60' 1.52
1/8 7.14
MPH 95.22
1/4 11.23
MPH 121.18 N/A

Not too bad for a small cammed 383...We were still tweaking the suspension to hit the tires even harder when the trans let go. After 3 years of abuse and the 7 wheels up launches today the 3 year old built 4L60E failed pretty badly...Something good broke inside..I have no forward or reverse gear and the car won't roll backwards at all!! I think we are looking at a going the TH400 route with a Vig 4400 and a trans brake maybe with the 2.75 1st gear set...We'll see what thetrans guy says when he gets the 4L60E apart...Anyway I'm done for the season, but it ended on a good note...

Very nice, thats almost enough mph for 10's once you get the suspension figured out. And thats not too bad considering your faster than most of the larger cammed cars out there.

Thanks..I'm on the fence about switching to a TH400 and more converter, but I'm toying with the 2.75 or 3.00 gear set for the TH400 because I like the 3.06 in the 4L60E now...We'll see...I can live w/o OD...I will lose the lockup function and maybe a mph or two as a result, but I think I could whittle the 60's down even more...and maybe a 10 second pass...

There's nothing like launching off a trans brake and not having to worry about the tranny. If your converter wasn't locking in the 1/4 right now you won't lose mph by switching, and even if it was chances are it wasn't helping the e.t. much.

Alan, I think a th400 is going to kill it.....I don't know what cam you have but 4400 is a small converter for a car running that quick.

congrats (on the run, not the trans)

I'm running a Vig 3600 now in the 4L60E, I'd think a TH400 with the 3.00 first gear and a 4000-4400 Vig would be the hot ticket...My torque peak is 5000-5200 so on paper it would seem to work well...

3 years on a 4l60e not too shabby
t-400 is the way though, you may loose hp on the dyno but dyno numbers are just that!
the track is the best judge.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the TH400 with the 2.75 or 3.00 gear set...Summit has the TCI 2.75 gear sets for $419...The best price I've seen so far..The 3.00 sets are around $625...I like the 3.06 first gear in the 4L60E, so I'm thinking the TH400 with the 3.00 would be the way to go...

why not talk to frank at CPT, he knows whats up.
Or, if you really want to do a track setup, powerglide it.

Yeah you are running well with that 4l60e and you will miss the OD, so I would get Frank to rebuild it with a T-brake. JMO Later clint

The guy/shop who did my trans 3 years ago is as reputable as Frank around my area...Specializes in the 700/4L60E...It had just about everything you could do to it...including the 5 gear front and rear planets, Beast shell, Sonnax super servo, etc, etc...I have faith in his stuff as he's built transmissions for me for over 15 years....But even he says that the 60E is on borrowed time when you beat on it for over 3 years...Hell, my Rossler built 4L60E only lasted 2 years and I wasn't making nearly the power/torque I'm making now...

I guess I was just thinking that a TH400 with a 3.00 gear set would still give me the great blast out of the hole of the 60E with more durability...I don't drive the car even anymore to really miss the OD...We'll see how it goes...Then there's the new cross member, shortened drive shaft, shifter, converter, etc...Lots to think about...

I thought the same thing about not having OD...man, I regret that decision.

I would rather rebuild every two-three years than lose it.

I hate not having OD...I am seriously looking at the 4L80 route...I hate it that much.
