need some help on a 383 build

I was looking to go with a 383 for my 95 camaro. Im thinking of going with all forged internals, but i needed to know what crank, pistons, bearings, rods, etc would be best? I hear that Callies makes some pretty good cranks but i still need some advice from someone who has a 383 setup. What kind of pistons? and also what would be the price range on something like this?

Look into "Compstar Components" it is Callies budget line and you can get complete rotating assemblies already balanced with their rods and cranks and Mahle pistons. Easily the best value out there.
Advanced Induction and Ellwein Engines both offer this and I have done and will continue to do buisiness with both.

I second AI and Karl - they've been there done that many times with fantastic results. Speak with them before you buy anything.

Most forged rotating assemblies will be in the $2000-2400 range if you are looking at quality parts. Callies makes good reliable components for the price.

Piston choice should be based on the application as there are a lot on choices. What are your goals for the car and are you considering a power adder?

Dont go with eagle.I was very disapointed with the quaility of my crank.I think if I had to do it over again I would just get a skat crank and maybe je pistons and I would prolly stick with the eagle rods

i was thinking of going with direct port nitrous. What do you think would be an appropriate compression for that?

Question

Eric, I assume the prices on these rotating assemblies with 3.875" instead of 3.750" stroker cranks would be about the same?

If you can't spring for the "regular" Callies line, which is made entirely in the US, the Compstar stuff is very nice. It is rough forged off shore but all the finishing and inspection is done here to a VERY high standard. I have seen a few of their cranks and a couple of sets of rods and all the dimensions were spot on with everything looking and fitting just as it should.

In terms of the CR question it is entirely dependent on what fuel is going to be run and how much nitrous will be used. AFAIK, Mahle does not make a piston specific for nitrous. If more than a ~150-200hp shot is planned you need to be thinking about the piston design in terms of crown thickness, height of the top ring land, etc.

Judging by the price of the Compstar stuff compared to Eagle it looks to be maybe a few hundred dollars more. I didn't realize it was that close in price. For that I'd definitely go with Compstar. I actually had to change out the Eagle rods I had for Compstar due to the rod bolt profile being more accommodating for the block clearancing.

Just to elaborate a bit. The problem with Eagle is QC. I have never heard of a "major" issue, but I have heard and seen more than one piece from them that was off spec. The undersized crank snout appears to be a recurring problem, for one example. A Compstar crank is maybe $100 more than the Eagle and in turn maybe $200 less than the Dragonslayer domestic line. Callies offers good prices on complete, balanced rotating assemblies with your choice of pistons from the major manfacturere. Sounds like Victory does as well. Another thing to like about Callies - they do not try to hide the origin of the parts. I am not accusing Eagle of overt deception, but the off shore origin of the parts is mentioned nowhere in their literature that I have ever noticed. And their logo is very "American". Callies is very upfront about the origin of the forgings for the Compstar line. That shows respect for the customer, a very good sign.
