need to replace 96 LT1, which year motor can i use?
need to replace 96 LT1, which year motor can i use?
i'm guessing 95 with the timing cover replaced, 96 of course and 97 with the heads no one likes. am i right in my assumption? this is going in a 96 Z28 and i'd like to just drop the motor in without any changes ( well if all i have to do is replace the timing cover on the 95 so be it). thanks for any help

thanks for the reply,
i have the motor off the car but it's no good. just in case i can only find a 95 motor, which i've found 2 of but no 96 or 97, can i just switch the hub, reluctor ring and timing cover from my motor? thanks again

There's nothing wrong with a set of 97 heads if you're going to leave them stock/untouched, in fact they outflow previous heads by a tad bit in virgin form (not much / hardly an issue).

Alternatively you could just use the PCM from the donor car.
If you end up changing the timing cover you should consider a cam upgrade.
If you decide to do a cam swap, then I think a 94 should work just as well as a 95.

With enough motivation, you can use any year LT1 in a 96.
The older, the more challenging however.
A 92-94 LT1 will need a knock sensor change to a 96-97. You will need to swap your coil/ignition module assembly over to that engine as well. If you do want to retain the crank sensor, this will be difficult since 92-94 engines were non vented and that would require swapping the cam, opti, timing cover, etc. Of course, you will need to use the 96 harness on this engine.
In addition, the 92-93 fuel rails and EGR are positioned differently, so the fuel line will have some slack in it. You will also need to use the 96 heated o2 sensors on a 92-93 and swap over your IAC valve since the 92-93 connector is different.
A 95 LT1 will be easier. You will need to do everything mentioned above minus a cam/opti swap if you would like to use the crank sensor.
Finally, a 96-97 engine will be a direct swap.

Re: need to replace 96 LT1, which year motor can i use?
thanks for the info guys, i'm just going to go ahead and keep searching for a 96 or 97, the easier the better at this point. i'll get the 95 if i can't find any and come back to ask more questions. i appreciate the help.
Re: need to replace 96 LT1, which year motor can i use?
hi again,
i found both a 96 and a 97 motor.....they want $1500 for each though. is this a fair price? i was expecting somewhere between $500-$1000 for a 10 year old motor.
*well i just called them to ask the mileage and apparently they don't have any 96 or 97 LT1's...even though when i went there an hour ago the other guy said they did.....
