Need to remove oil pan!
Need to remove oil pan!
I have an engine hoist and I am trying to find out where to place the chain or strap in order to lift the engine on my 97 camaro. I would like to attempt this myself. Also, do I need this http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/23621/10002/-1 so my pickup won't come off?
TPIS sells an LT1-specific device called the "Happy Hooker" that uses the bolts for the fuel rails. Hard as that is to believe, everyone who has used it seems to have positive results.
When we pulled my engine out the top, we used bolts in the holes in the heads for the exhaust manifold bolts. That, coupled with a balance bar. If you are just trying to lift the engine, you probably won't pull the manifold, though.

Thanks for the responses. Can I put one grade 8 bolt on the rear passenger head and one grade 8 at the front of the drivers head and lift it that way? Will it hurt anything? I gotta get my car back on the road. I have also seen where someone has put straps around the exhaust manifolds and lifted it that way. I just want to lift it enough to pull the oil pan and access the oil pump.
I think your trying to hard!
Any bolts that go into the heads or block will work. You could even put a strap under the intake manifold and lift it there. Your only lifting it a couple of inches. I've used a block of wood under the harmonic balancer and a hydraulic jack, worked fine. I don't think you need to "remove" the trans. cross member but I would loosen the trans. mount bolt, or remove it, to lessen the tension on it. You may have to remove the exhaust from the manifolds also.
