Question Need QUICK Info on Driveshaft!!

I have a couple of questions I need answered about a driveshaft:

1) On a 2002 T/A or Camaro with Auto, are all the driveshafts on the 5.7 engine Aluminum? Did they even make a steel shaft for the 2002?

2) Is there a difference (other than the yoke) between the driveshaft they put in the 2002 model if it has 3.23 gears or 2.73 gears (I assume it is just the yoke, but the shaft is the same size in diameter, right?)?

I am going to buy this for my 1995 T/A and want to be sure what I am getting and need to know ASAP, thanks everyone!

Thanks, I kinda knew it would fit fine, but want to be sure it is indeed aluminum and if the diameter changes with the yoke for the 2.73 or 3.23 gears.

I have 3.23 gears and want to be sure the driveshaft is the same diameter on both gear ratios.

Not all LS1s were delivered with aluminum driveshafts according to another recent post and the link within the post has many people saying that they got the steel shaft.

I was not sure, but thanks for letting me know Shoebox!!!

Also, if it is aluminum, is there any difference in diameters depending on gear ratios? I would not think GM did that, but heck, who knows with GM sometimes, eh?
Thanks!

I doubt there were any different ones due to ratio. The aluminum ones tend to be of a larger diameter than steel. The steel ones are actually stronger (all this is pertaining to stock driveshafts).

A mention in one of those threads tended to indicate that the LS1 steel ones were balanced. I cannot speak to the validity of that. All driveshafts are balanced to a degree, but you can see how in the past some of the LT1 shafts were not so smooth. Perhaps they critically balanced the steel LS1 shafts with more care, who knows?

So, I assume that the only reason someone would want to get an aluminum driveshaft is because it is lighter or maybe they have an older LT1 car with driveshaft vibe problems?

Hmmm, well.....I gotta ask...what would you use in your car?

By the way , my Dad lives in Hot Springs!!!

I would agree what you said is true. I swapped to an aluminum one when I was chasing a vibe problem that turned out not to be the shaft.

A smooth steel one is fine, IMO and can handle more power than a stock aluminum one. There may be a slight gain in hp with an aluminum one. It all depends on how you use your car and what kind of power you are making.
