Need MPG help
Need MPG help
So i realize these cars arent about gas mileage and when i got it i had no concern over it. Now i have to start traveling from NJ to philly several times a week and those trips turn into about 100+ miles each time. Normally id get a beater car but that isnt a great option at the moment. So its either get better MPG out of my car now or sell it and get something better. here are my current mods
1995 Camaro z28 Convertible
Pacesetter Mid length headers
3.73 rear gears
Transgo Shift kit
2500 Stall converter
Custom 218/228 @.50 lift cam .525 lift intake .525 exhaust
Port and polish intake and exhaust
Eagle Crank shaft
10.5:1 Compression
Right now i get 13 mpg. 200 miles per tank when i hit 200 i better fill damn soon doesnt matter how i drive heavy or light. 200 miles and its time to fuel up. So my question is would changing out the rear gears to something like 3.08 greatly help me? I know id loose alot of my low end punch which is alot of fun the car is a beast off the line but if losing that low end grunt lets me keep my convertible id do it for now till i can get a 2nd car at a much later point. Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks! BTW car runs great has had basic tune up stuff oil plugs etc.

Re: Need MPG help
Put a manual transmission in it. Lower numerical gears will bog that engine and probably end up being worse on gas, especially around the city. I'd sooner drive 10 MPH slower, but I usually am doing 10 over the limit. It's tough to really squeeze any more MPG out of these motors. Driving habits effect MPG more than anything.
If you are going to sell, get a LS1 with a T56 transmission. Keep it stock and you should see over 20 on the highway easy.

I was getting 25mpg on highway with my stock bird. I dont even have my tune dialed in yet (with current mods in sig) and am getting 15 mixed driving. My guess is there can be improvement in the tune.

Re: Need MPG help
You have an exhaust leak or a tuning issue!
My 96 Impala used to get 18mpg with a 396ci engine, 3.73 gears, and 3000 stall TC. No reason for your car to get 13mpg.
I would contact PCMforless (Bryan Herter) and see if you can set up an appointment for a street tune (he tunes while you drive the car).
Hell...it's worth a shot!
