need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
I jus finished up my cam install, for the most part. jus gota get the radiator and crank hub back on. But for what ever reason, the crank hub will not go back on!!!!!!!!!!
I tryed using a longer bolt, to pull it on, but that only gets it on so far. Tryed hitting it with a piece of wood and a hammer (might not be safe) and that did not work either. MAde absolutly no progress.
The hub is not even in the front main seal yet. Its about 1/16" away from it. Why won't it go in any further? Am i doing something wrong?

Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
Put the hub in the oven at 275* for about 4 hr's.Make sure there are no burr's on the crank or in the hub.It should slide on by hand.Use thick gloves for handling it.
Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
Make sure to sautee with butter every 15 minutes!
Just kidding heating works well. Do you have any burs on the crank or does yours have a key that may have got rocked up a bit during pull?

Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
nah, no key or burs. I'm boiling it as we speak. That should work just as well, and maybe alittle faster. I'll get back to you, gota go add the veggies.
Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
Boiling = failed. I only did it for like 30 minutes though.
It is not in the oven at 500*. Gunna let it go for about an hour. Is 4 hours really neccisary?

ORRR.....you could do it the safe way, and go to sears and buy Grade 8 7/16" fine threaded bolts in the longest size and the (roughly) 3rd longest size they offer. Combine these 2 with your stock piece with GM washer on it, and you now have 3 bolts you can use in stages to finesse the hub back on...it goes on easy when there is threads left to be had....
you may only THINK you do not have a long enough bolt when really you stripped the ends of what is a lesser grade bolt and thus made no progress.
think about it -- the threads need to be able to withstand and for that matter overcome the friction between the hub and the crank snout...Grade 8 is your only option. so take your pick - cook your hub and risk scorching yourself or quick run to sears hardware and for $3 you can safely finish your cam install
another tip--if you think your bolt is the wrong size, play with some washers...you can make a longer bolt become shorter by doing that, but maybe for example not as short as your next physically shorter bolt...hope this helps

Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
what the hell. mine baked in the oven for well over an hour at 500 degrees. Slid on alittle more, but still not all the way. i have about a half inch more to go. I really don't want to be cranking on those threads, as shoe box said. I'm thinkin about heating it up with some accetaline, becuase it seems like the end opened up because that was resting on a hot cookie sheet in the oven, while the rest was only exposed to the heat.
Is this safe, or am i going to fry my front main seal?

Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
Perfect formula for a tosted front seal and maybe a visit from the local fire department! If heating i would not get over about 250-275 as you may start cooking a seal at that point. I personally have never had trouble just getting it on with the bolt, BUT i hear lots of bad things that have happened doing that. Truck down to your local autoparts store and see if they got a puller/ installer combo for rent. You may thank yourself later.
Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
still no luck, car starts with the new cam and all. but the belts won't line up perfectly. They might line up enough to work, but i still know its not perfect. its not centered on the tentioner. its hangin off by like 1/8"
Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
you may have rust binding it up as it's going on, maybe a very light sanding to the inside of the hub , it doesn't take much to tie it up,how hard was it to take off?
Re: need help quick! Crank hub will not go back on
careful hitting the hub directly with a hammer because you will mushroom the end so the balancer wont fit. I did this and had to grind the end back down with a dremel... stupid stupid stupid! Learn from my mistake.
