Need Help Exhaust manifolds are cherry red
Hey Guys
Once again i need some help. Last night my z28 started running real bad and started loosing power the temp went up then it really lost power .I looked under the hood and sence it was dark i seen both exhaust manifolds cherry red. I just put new heads on the car 3 weeks ago and it been running fine but i did notice a smeel like gas at the back of the car. last night was the longest run i put on the car 200miles to nashville now this happened. Could it be the catalytic converter clogged up and could that be the gas smell also?
Thanks for any advise
Ron

Re: Need Help Exhaust manifolds are cherry red
sounds like a catalytic converter problem to me, only two reasons your manifolds would glow red would be a timing problem or a clogged cat, and the exhaust smell would lead me to think its the cat thats giving you trouble
its offical the Catalytic converter is bad. Now they want 139 labor and 300 to cut the old one off and weld a new one on or 540 total for one that has the ypipies on it. What is the best thing to do ? what is the best brand?
Re: Need Help Exhaust manifolds are cherry red
you could get a 3" universal catco or carsound cat on ebay for like 60 bucks, and then have them weld it in there. i dont see any reason to drop 540 bucks on a cat install personally
Re: Need Help Exhaust manifolds are cherry red
single cat cant just use an o2 sim, thats only for dual cat cars with a second set of o2's after the cats. although i dont think it throws a code if the cat isnt there
Re: Need Help Exhaust manifolds are cherry red
Single cat cars only have 2 pre-cat O2's, one for each bank. Removing the cat has no effect on the operation of the engine, other than increased hydrocarbons and a few extra HP.
