Need help ASAP!

Ok I built a new motor for my car and I put it in and I have everything hooked up. I was getting ready to start it and I hooked up the battery and sparks started flying and when the battery was hooked up I heard a sound that was like a vaccum cleaner I didnt try to start it I just disconnected the battery. The car doesnt have any emissions stuff left on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the wiring on the starter, you may have the wrong wires on wrong prongs...that happened with my Chevelle, just switch the wires up!

The wires on the starter may be touching each other.

Definitely the starter. The solenoid may be stuck. I had a problem similar to that. I drove the car about 3 blocks shut it off and heard a noise just like that. I popped the hood and noticed that the starter was running but not engaged. I scrambled to disconnect the battery. I could smell the motor windings burning. It stopped on it's own but runs a little slower now. At least it still works.
