Need Headers Advise

pretty soon i will be gettin a pair of long tube headers from hookers. so here a few questions i need to know before i screw this up:

1. how to take the stock headers off. under out or top out?

2. the headers is long tube. should i slide the headers from the top or bottom?

3. i heard the passage side headers is a pain in the a#$, what i got to do before i started on that side.

4. should i weld or put a clip of my cat at the end of the headers or just slip on the y-pipe?

1. When removing the stock "manifolds", I took them both out the top. A good idea would be to spray down all of those manifold bolts as good as possible with PB Blaster to help prevent snapping any in the heads.
2. With my Pacesetter long tubes, I put the drivers side in from the bottom (the car was jacked very high) and the passenger side from the top.
3. The passenger side was a bit of a PITA, I ended up removing the valve cover in order to get enough clearance to get it in.
4.The Hooker headers use a flange style connection, not a slip fit. Also, you will need the off-road y-pipe that Hooker sells, your stock y-pipe and cat will not fit the headers.

I had my car on wood "stands" (all four wheels) that I made, which
got the car 20" up to the belly. Both the driver and passenger sides
slipped right in from the bottom. I did, however, remove the motor
mount on the passenger side and lift the engine a bit (oh, and I also
removed the starter - 5 minutes). I was replacing the motor mounts
anyway, so it was a given to lift the engine up to make it easier.

I'm not so sure cops have the facility to validate whether a vehicle
requires what type of emissions equipment - that happens at the time
that you have your vehicle inspection/emissions test. The police will,
as a rule, only ticket an "excessively loud" exhaust.

Ah, yes - Temple, TX. The cops were like that in the early 70's
(dated a girl who's dad was a DI at Fort Hood). Temple, TX, back then,
had the reputation for the town with the most street walkers per capita.

headers-top or bottom

I just finished a header install. Used a 6 ton jackstand under the crankshaft snout(just behind the harmonic balancer) on my LT1. Drop the crossmember(6 bolts). To do this, disconnect the lines from the steering gear, take the one bolt off the steering sector, disconnect the brake lines, take the shock and the ball joint off the lower control arm. Used a 2 jaw puller on the ball joint to knock it off the spindle. Pull the bolt off the motor mounts on each side. Hope this helps.
