Need to find TDC FAST!

Ok I am led to beleive my opti is not on properly and my timing is way off. I purchased the car without an opti, waterpump, or crank pulley. I slid the new opti right on and pointed the rotor in the direction I beleived to be TDC. Apparently I was WRONG as the car was able to crank once, ran like crap, and I havent been able to get it going since.

Im going to purchase a piston stop. Now I know I stick it in to the #1 piston, rotate clockwise and when it hits thats TDC for one side. Where do I mark the crank pulley? Straight up?

Now I know I have to rotate the other way and mark it again when it hits again (again need to know where to mark it.) After that Im confised as to what to do....Do I go to the center of those two marks and thats my TRUE TDC???

I dont have a degree wheel nor know how to use one.

Also once I do aquire TDC, on the opti, where do I face the rotor? Do I have to remove the whole opti to do this or can I just take the front cover off and throw it back on with some sealent?

You don't have to worry about tdc. Just make sure you get the cam pin in the right slot on the opti. It's obvious which slot it go's in if you look at it. It's the one with the little slot on the end.http://shbox.com/1/opti_back.jpg

Car is a 94, never pulled the timing cover off or anything. From what I read there are 3 ways to be wrong, the opti slid right on but a the rotor could have moved and wasnt in the right spot

Ok. Now that we know you have a 94 (might want to make a sig) You line up the master splines. Same deal. You don't have to find tdc. Look at this. http://shbox.com/1/93-94_opti.jpg

Thats the thing thats killing me, I did exactly that and the opti slipped right on. Would the rotor in the opti moving have anything to do with it?

My car is exhibiting these exact symptoms

The keyways have to match and that's it. Did you notice the other thread you referred to, the guy had difficulty getting it right? If the opti is good and the keyways match, then it's going to run.

Thats what I dont understand it slipped RIGHT ON. But yet, I have to floor it to get it to run, and it doesnt stay alive as soon as I let go. I got it running the other day it ran like it had a BAD miss. I shut it down, after trying to get it to crank a couple times after that I finally got her going and it idled great. I thought that was rather odd but dismissed it as the car hasn't ran in over a year and a half. Couple days later I go back and now this I don't know what the problem is. I mean it seems like the same symptoms but if it wasnt lined up it wouldnt have ran right?

If it was off just a little, it might still run, but probably with no power. With a car that has not been run for that long, fuel injectors may be clogged, too.

SO what exactly would be off? Im asking as to what my next step would be cause I cant even get it to turn over now. Do I have to remove the opti and slide it back on? Reposition the rotor? Im at a loss

If you want to be sure, you'll have to remove the opti and check the indexing. Not saying it's your problem, just something you have to rule out.

Man this is an absolute nightmare. I cant understand how it ran great idling, then as soon as it went into gear it dropped below 500RPM and almost died. And now I cant even get it to run at all

Add a "signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, engine, tranny and any major mods. That way people can give you the correct info for your specific car.

Just got back. She fired right up I horribly crossed the wires. Never thought I'd make that mistake but there's a first for everything. Didn't mean to make everyone crazy just I try to prepare for the worst. I still have a small leak still on my water pump so I'm going to pull it off again and use RTV this time around and see how it holds. Thanks everyone for the fast responses!!!
