Mystery coolant problem

I replaced the heater core in my car and it works better. GOOD NEWS

It will run fine for about 10 minutes and will stay @170*. After awhile the temp guage slowly goes up. It creeps up until it over heats. The process can take up to 30-40 minutes.

Even if it does not overheat, when I stop to go into a store. The temp guage will be at 180-200*.
But when I get back into the car and began to drive the temp guage will not slowly creep,l it will shoot staright into the red after a minute or so.

It seems like whenever I open the radiator cap to add more coolant after that the car runs fine. BUT if I start to drive the car withoutopening the radiator cap it will overheat automatically.

I need to fix this prob. Any suggestions

You need to get all the air out of the system. There are two bleeder screws located by the front of the engine. One is on the water neck, coming off the waterpump. The other is on a hose about 3 or 4 inches to the left(passenger side) of the other. Open both screws with the car running. Put rags under the screw so you don't get the opti spark wet. Open the radiator and add the coolant as needed. Bleed each screw till a small steady stream of coolant comes out. Tighten it up and do the same to the other. You may have to repeat a few times but you MUST get all air out.

Out of curiosity...how long did it take to replace your heater core?

It can take a few more times or over the course of a few days, depending on how persistent you are. I did my T-stat and I filled it up ,as much as it would take. Started the car with the cap open and let it come to temp, when the stat opened I filled best I could and then cracked the bleeders open and worked them abit going between the bleeders and keeping the radiator topped off. Took a total of 20 minutes.

Re: Mystery coolant problem

You know what now that I think about it I did do it until coolant came out of the bleeder screw that is on the thermostat housing.

Am I supposed to wait until coolant comes out of the blleder above the therm housing (close that one) and then keep adding until the coolant comes out of the other bleeder?
Because I did not do that.

I just let it come out of that first bleeder.

Yup, only after you do the other one, go back and double check and repeat the procedure to make sure.
