Is my starter suppossed to be like this?
Today I was looking at my starter when I was going to put in on and it looks as if the starter drive is recessed a little into the starter. It hasnt been touched since it was taken off so I know its not damaged or changed. I just wasnt sure if this was the way it was suppossed to be and whether or not it would mount right to the flywheel.
If I just bolt it up will it align right by itself or do I have to adjust it?

Matt,
It should be recessed (although I'm not sure how much). But considering you haven't touched it since you began the rebuild, I wouldn't worry.
When you energize the starter solenoid (ie. turn the key to start), as it begins to spin, it also pushes the "drive gear" (for lack of better word) forward to engage on the flywheel teeth. That's why when you "double start" a car it makes that skreeching noise, that's the "drive" making contact with the flywheel, and since the flywheel is already moving, it grinds and makes that noise.
As far as needing to shim it or anything, like I said earlier today, I would say no. I never had a prob., nor did the guy w/ the Firehawk.
