Is my fuel pump going out...

My car always seems to run better when the tank is full, I was driving around today on about a quarter tank and it was acting up again, it has NO power down low, and when you bring the revs up past 4k it starts jerking. I know this is prolly a stupid question because i cant see any correlation between having a full tanks or a low tank of gas making the car run better. My car has 83k on it, but it isnt throwing any codes so i dont think its the opti yet, the plugs are new, but the wires are stock i belive. I know these types of probelms are hit or miss but its really starting to **** me off when i want to merge in traffic and it just falls flat on its face.
thanks for all the help

Our gas gauges are notorious for being off so you may be less than a 1/4 tank which could cause fuel starvation. The other thing is our gas recirculates so a low tank causes the fuel to heat up which could hurt performance.

Can't agree more about the fuel gauge . Today, my guage was inbetween 1/4 and 1/2, I went to fill up and only had less than 2 gallons of gas . Jegs sells a hypertech fuel gauge for $35, it has a long hose that you can tape to the windshield. Get it and monitor your fuel pressure (many posts on this subject). Much cheaper than replacing your fuel pump right off the bat, and it's something you'll use more and more as you mod your car.....

Re: Is my fuel pump going out...

LOL i have an Autometer fuel pressure guage, but it crapped out on me a few months back and i JUST got around to takeing the guage and sending unit out of the car so i can send it into Autometer under warrenty. I've got it sitting right here and the needle is pegged at 36-37psi, i belive that was at idle but i cant be 100% sure. What should the fuel pressure be at idle and WOT? I had the sending unit hooked up in-line right before the fuel line got to the fuel solinoid, is that a good place to have it to get a accurate reading?

oh one more thing, it smells like gas in and around my car REALLY bad. I've checked for leaks and it all looks normal. The car doesnt have any cats and has had the EGR, EVAP, and all the other emissions related stuff programmed out of the computer. Its all still on there just programmed out, so that when i get around to putting on some headers i dont have to deal with the CEL.

Fuel pressure should be 41 - 47 psi with the vacuum line disconnected (simulates WOT) from the fuel pressure regulator at idle.

Having no cats can often cause a strong smell of gas, especially if you're running rich due to vacuum leak, exhaust leak, etc.
How long have you been smelling gas? How long have you been running without converters?

Re: Is my fuel pump going out...

The previous owner removed the cats, he cut out the passenger side cat, and took the driver-side cat off and gutted it. So they have been off for prolly a year and a half- two years. As far as the smell goes, i've smelled it ever since i got my nitrous installed, its a wet kit. I've checked all the connections for the fuel side of the nitrous kit and they are all dry. I've checked them countless times because i really fear a fire after my mustang went up in flames
My mustang didnt have cats on it and i never smelled the level of gas that i smell on the camaro. Latley i've been getting HORRIBLE gas milage, i drove up to Baltimore from DC (like a 50 mile trip) and then back again and i had prolly 1/3 of a tank left. I'm lucky to get 175 miles to a tank in mostly city driving around DC. Is that normal?
thanks again for all the help
